1. THE CRANKSHAFT HAS SOME PLAY
How to solve
Check if your
crankshaft has some play. If it has some play you might want to
replace you crankshaft bearing. biggend or small-end.
How to check
Remove the
spark plug, take a screw driver and gently press the screwdriver
against the piston. If you feel some play, this is probably
causing the ticking sound.
2. THE PISTON IS TOUCHING THE CYLINDER HEAD
How to solve
Your piston might be hitting the cylinder head because of a gasket
that's to small. You can try to add a bigger base gasket (e.g.
1mm) or even use 2 normal base gaskets to see if this solves the
ticking sound.
3. WRONG FUEL - OIL MIXTURE
How to solve
Always
respect the 1:50 fuel-oil mixture ratio in case of two-stroke oil.
In case you use Triboron, respect the 1:100 Fuel-Triboron mixture.
4. A BADLY ADJUSTED IGNITION, CARBURATOR OR AIR LEAKS
How to solve
Adjust your carburator, spark plug and ignition accordingly and
check for air leaks.
5. BADLY ADJUSTED IDLE SCREW (RPM TO HIGH)
How to solve
Adjust the
idle screw appropriately. Your Puch moped should run smoothly in
idle, so not to high in RPM. A rule of thumb that is often applied
is that your rear wheel should not move while running idle. When
adjusting the idle screw, make sure the engine is already
warmed-up!
6. WORN PISTON RINGS
How to solve
Check your
piston rings. If the gaps of the piston rings are dirty or your
piston has a brown colour after the ring area, you might want to
replace your piston rings.
7. DUDE RELAX, IT'S A PUCH MAXI
How to solve
You can't and
perhaps you just don't need to. A Puch Maxi just makes a lot of
sound and certainly in case use an Airsal cylinder (they tend to
make a lot of sound).
I do know the feeling, you just put your engine back together and
then you start hearing things. But it might be normal, as long as
you don't have any other issues (damage to your piston, cylinder
or any running issues) you can decide to just let it be (what I
did). Trust your rebuilded engine and if anything goes wrong,
we'll see how to fix that later. That's what it's all about when
working on an old Puch mopeds.
